We in the Democratic base are often so desperate for a hero, so eager for a bold leader who will stand up to the MAGA faction that we become willing to overlook the rot underneath the surface. We see a man who speaks the right language of justice, truth and fairness, and we hand him our trust without checking his character. But character isn’t what you say when the cameras are rolling; it’s how you treat people when you THINK no one is watching. And lately, too many men in our ranks have proven that their public persona is nothing more than a mask.

Look at the trail of scandals we’ve been asked to ignore or "contextualize" away. We saw the downfall of Andrew Cuomo, a man who was once hailed as the gold standard of leadership, only for the world to find a pattern of harassment and a toxic culture of intimidation. What we're seeing with Graham Platner situation. Whether we're excusing his "lack of knowledge" for getting a Nazi tattoo, or him being too forceful with past partners, or wether he raped Ms. Racicot. We are now forced to make a decision if fighting for a progressive future "trumps" personal conduct. We remember John Edwards, a man who ran on "Two Americas" while leading a double life that mocked the very family values he preached. And then there is Eric Swalwell here is the reoccurring theme: men in power thinking the rules of common decency and CONSENT don’t apply to them because they are on the right side of wanting to "save our democracy"

When we throw our unwavering support behind these flawed men just because they wear blue instead of red, how are we any different from those in the MAGA cult? We rightfully point out the hypocrisy of those who support Donald Trump, a man found liable for sexual assault and named more times in the Epstein files than Jesus is in the bible; yet we find ourselves making excuses for our own "champions" because we’re afraid of losing a seat. If we argue that "our guy" is better because his policy is better, while his conduct is just as predatory or deceptive, we’ve already lost something greater than an election.

I’ve always said that I believe in the truth and part of that truth is a firm, unwavering stance: I believe women. I believe victims of sexual assault. I believe them regardless of how many years have passed, and I believe them even if they carry their trauma to the grave. We live in a climate where a woman can come forward with a sombering truth, and somehow, through the "art" of political spin or the magic of social media, she becomes the villain. It is ass-backwards to claim we are the party of women’s rights while we silence the women who find the courage to speak up against men in our own ranks.

The phrase "Vote Blue No Matter Who" was meant to be a rallying cry for unity, but it has been weaponized (I hate that word because Republicans use it so aimlessly) into a shield for the mediocre and the manipulative. If the "Who" is a man who lacks basic decency, who treats women as property, and who lies to the public about his true character, then that "Who" doesn’t deserve your vote. We cannot protect democracy with leaders who have no integrity. The ends do not justify the means if, by the time we reach the end, we have sacrificed the very values we were supposed to be fighting for. We have to be better. We have to demand better. Because if we lose our moral compass, we’ve already lost the country.

The recent primary win for Democratic Socialists like Melat Kiros’s historic victory in Colorado are more than just headlines. They are proof that the status quo isn’t just being questioned; it’s being rejected by people who are tired of waiting for "someday" to come. These wins show a growing hunger for bold action and ideas. When an incumbent who has been in office for a decade or two or hell even three, loses to a newcomer with a democratic socialist platform, it’s a signal that the old way of doing business isn't cutting it for the person working two jobs just to keep the lights on.

Then comes this, one of the loudest messages I’ve heard on the campaign trail is a resounding, burning disdain for the way special interest groups have been buying our elections. Voters are tired of seeing their voices drowned out by "dark money" and corporate PACs. We have to be honest with ourselves, many in our own party have and continue to benefit from this system, but that doesn't mean we should justify it when it takes power from the people and gives it to corporations and “dark money” donors who could care less about us. To truly be the party of the people, we must stand together to reject the influence of big money and commit to passing laws that limit it. A vote shouldn't be something you can put a price tag on.

But I’ve also been around long enough to know that a few wins doesn't mean the debate is over. We’ve seen other races where progressive or democratic socialist challengers didn’t cross the finish line, falling to candidates who lean more toward the center or moderates. We shouldn’t look at these losses as failures of a movement, but rather as a reminder that our party is as diverse as the country itself. We shouldn’t get so consumed with crowning one side the "wave of the future" that we stop listening to the voters who aren't there yet. The real win isn't just a specific candidate taking a seat, it’s the Democratic Party is actually forced to listen to a wider range of its own people and what keeps them up at night.

Even a small portion of this party is still part of this party. Think of it like a friendship or a marriage; if one person stops feeling seen or heard, they don’t just sit there forever. They start looking for love in other places. We get defections when people feel like their voices are being silenced or their struggles are being treated as footnotes. We love to call ourselves the "Big Tent Party," but you can’t have a "members only" section inside that tent. If we want to keep everyone under one roof, we have to make sure everyone feels like they have a seat at the table.

Our strength is in our unity, and we need that strength now more than ever. We are facing a Trump administration that has shown a total disregard for the guardrails of our democracy. My goal and I hope it is all of ours, is to get the majority back in Congress. We need that majority to hold this administration accountable to the law and to ensure that what I saw happen at the Capitol on January 6th and every day after, never happens again. We can’t do that if we’re busy tearing each other down over who is the most Democratic. We need every vote, from the moderate in the suburbs to the democratic socialist in the city.

At the end of the day, people are looking for a break. They’re looking at their grocery receipts, their rent increases, and their healthcare premiums, and they’re asking who is going to make their lives easier. Whether we agree on every policy or not, we all want to lower costs for everyday Americans. We want a country where you don't have to go into debt just to stay healthy or get an education. That’s the common ground that wins elections.

I spent over fifteen years protecting the Capitol, and I’ve seen what happens when we lose our way. We win when we stand together. Let’s celebrate the new energy in our party, learn from the losses, and keep our eyes on the mission: protecting our democracy and delivering for the people who sent us there. It’s time to hold the line, together.

Stepping off the Capitol steps and onto the campaign trail was an extension of the oath I took years ago. I spent my career protecting the physical home of our democracy, and I ran to protect its soul. On January 6th, I saw what happens when truth is sacrificed for power. I entered this race because I believe the people’s house should be occupied by those who have stood on the front lines for our country, not by those who have mastered the art of political maneuvering or, worse, those who are hand-picked by the highest bidder.

This election provided a sobering, infuriating lesson: our democracy is currently for sale. When special interest groups and Super PACs pour tens of millions of dollars into a single race to distort a record and drown out a message, it is a direct assault on the voters. These groups don't care about our community; they care about their own bottom line. It’s why I was so proud to have the endorsement of End Citizens United, an organization that understands that until we get the "big money" out of politics, the average citizen’s voice will always be a whisper against the roar of corporate spending.

The sheer volume of outside money used to buy this election is a threat to the "one person, one vote" ideal. When a few wealthy donors can spend more than an entire grassroots movement, the playing field isn’t just tilted, it’s a next to near impossible obstacle to overcome. We cannot have a government of the people, by the people, and for the people if the people are being outspent 10-to-1 by anonymous interests. This isn't just about me losing a race; it’s about the dangerous precedent that a seat in Congress can be purchased like a piece of real estate.

Now that the primary is over, the work of representation falls to those moving forward. I want to see Adrian Boafo succeed, and I hope that he remains steadfast in representing the actual residents of the district, not the special interests that flooded the airwaves. The people deserve a representative who answers to them, not to the PACs that cleared the path. I challenge Adrian to be a voice for the voiceless and to fight for the systemic reforms we need to ensure that the voters and only the voters decide our future.

As for me, I am far from defeated. I’ve faced much darker days than a lost election, and if my time as a police officer taught me anything, it’s how to stand your ground when the pressure is highest. I may not be headed to the House floor as your representative, but I am not going anywhere. Titles are temporary, but duty is permanent. The fight to reclaim our democracy from the grip of special interests is just beginning, and I am honored to remain in the trenches with you.
