1.2 million registered voters in Texas are on something called a suspense list. That’s six percent of all registered voters in the entire state.
Three hundred thousand of those people are in Harris County. Houston. One of the most diverse counties in the country.
Most of them have no idea.
Here’s how it worked. The state tried to verify addresses by mail. People didn’t respond. Maybe they moved. Maybe they never got the letter. Maybe life happened. And the state just quietly moved them to this list. You can still vote if you’re on it, but your registration can be cancelled. And the deadline to fix it is October 5th.
October 5th.
Texas has no online voter registration. No same-day registration. So if you miss that window, you might show up in November and find out you can’t vote.
Now. I don’t think this is unrelated to the fact that Trump called Greg Abbott personally to push redistricting that drew people like Jasmine Crockett out of her district. Think about who’s on that suspense list. Think about where Harris County is. Think about who lives there.
I’m not speculating. I’m connecting dots that are right in front of us.
Before I move on, I want to drop some good news because I don’t want you walking away feeling like everything is doom. Maryland’s state Supreme Court just handed us a win. There is now a question going on the ballot to redraw congressional districts, which would draw out Andy Harris and his insurrection-loving self. Don’t mess with us, Maryland. That’s real. That matters.
Texas cheats in football and now they want to cheat in voting.
Texas put people on a list that can ignores their legal registration and can be used as an excuse to cancel their voting rights… Why? because they did not respond to a Texas state government request for their address? Is that legal?! We get -
-scam requests for personal info
-piles of snail mail
-sometimes 50+ manic emails and texts every day or hour
- all asking for money for candidates and causes or crises. Or giving us manipulative surveys that try to guilt us into paying for whatever.
Many of us just throw political letters away and delete emails/texts without opening. Is that a reason we should lose our registration and right to vote?!
