Vote Blue No Matter Who??

The Moral High Ground should not be treated as a Campaign Slogan

I spent fifteen years wearing a badge and a uniform, protecting the halls of the United States Capitol. On January 6th, I saw firsthand what happens when people abandon their decency for a cult of personality. I saw what happens when the "ends justify the means" becomes a way of life. But as I’ve transitioned from the front lines of law enforcement to the arena of politics, advocating for the soul of this Nation, I’ve realized that the erosion of our moral compass isn’t just a "them" problem. It’s a humanity problem that cuts across the aisles and transcends policitics and its here at our front door.

We in the Democratic base are often so desperate for a hero, so eager for a bold leader who will stand up to the MAGA faction that we become willing to overlook the rot underneath the surface. We see a man who speaks the right language of justice, truth and fairness, and we hand him our trust without checking his character. But character isn’t what you say when the cameras are rolling; it’s how you treat people when you THINK no one is watching. And lately, too many men in our ranks have proven that their public persona is nothing more than a mask.

Look at the trail of scandals we’ve been asked to ignore or "contextualize" away. We saw the downfall of Andrew Cuomo, a man who was once hailed as the gold standard of leadership, only for the world to find a pattern of harassment and a toxic culture of intimidation. What we're seeing with Graham Platner situation. Whether we're excusing his "lack of knowledge" for getting a Nazi tattoo, or him being too forceful with past partners, or wether he raped Ms. Racicot. We are now forced to make a decision if fighting for a progressive future "trumps" personal conduct. We remember John Edwards, a man who ran on "Two Americas" while leading a double life that mocked the very family values he preached. And then there is Eric Swalwell here is the reoccurring theme: men in power thinking the rules of common decency and CONSENT don’t apply to them because they are on the right side of wanting to "save our democracy"

When we throw our unwavering support behind these flawed men just because they wear blue instead of red, how are we any different from those in the MAGA cult? We rightfully point out the hypocrisy of those who support Donald Trump, a man found liable for sexual assault and named more times in the Epstein files than Jesus is in the bible; yet we find ourselves making excuses for our own "champions" because we’re afraid of losing a seat. If we argue that "our guy" is better because his policy is better, while his conduct is just as predatory or deceptive, we’ve already lost something greater than an election.

I’ve always said that I believe in the truth and part of that truth is a firm, unwavering stance: I believe women. I believe victims of sexual assault. I believe them regardless of how many years have passed, and I believe them even if they carry their trauma to the grave. We live in a climate where a woman can come forward with a sombering truth, and somehow, through the "art" of political spin or the magic of social media, she becomes the villain. It is ass-backwards to claim we are the party of women’s rights while we silence the women who find the courage to speak up against men in our own ranks.

The phrase "Vote Blue No Matter Who" was meant to be a rallying cry for unity, but it has been weaponized (I hate that word because Republicans use it so aimlessly) into a shield for the mediocre and the manipulative. If the "Who" is a man who lacks basic decency, who treats women as property, and who lies to the public about his true character, then that "Who" doesn’t deserve your vote. We cannot protect democracy with leaders who have no integrity. The ends do not justify the means if, by the time we reach the end, we have sacrificed the very values we were supposed to be fighting for. We have to be better. We have to demand better. Because if we lose our moral compass, we’ve already lost the country.
